Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are artificial roots and teeth that are made of titanium. They are surgically placed into the upper or lower jaw to replace teeth that have been lost or removed. Advancements in dental technology allow implants to look natural and perform like regular teeth.

Why are dental implants necessary?

Dr. Choi often uses dental implants when a patient needs to replace one or more missing teeth, without affecting the adjacent teeth. Implants can also:

  • Resolve joint pain or bite problems caused by teeth shifting into the empty space
  • Restore chewing, speech, and digestion
  • Enhance the jaw structure and improve facial symmetry
  • Support a bridge or denture, making it more secure and comfortable

What does getting dental implants involve?

The process of getting implants involves a series of steps, but appointments are fast and efficient. Dr. Choi may take a scan with a 3D x-ray or impressions of your jaw and teeth to determine how your bones, gum tissue, and teeth spacing will be restored by an implant.

During the procedure, your teeth and gums are numbed by a local anesthesia, or Dr. Choi might put you under moderate sedation if that is an option you would like to explore. The implant or titanium root is surgically placed into the bone and allowed to heal and integrate itself anywhere between 3-6 months.

Once the implant has healed in the bone, the artificial tooth is made and fitted to the post portion of the implant. Immediately after the tooth is fitted to the implant, the tooth is ready to function and clean much like a natural tooth.

You will receive care instructions from Dr. Choi when your treatment is completed.  Good oral hygiene and eating habits, combined with regular dental visits, will aid in the life of your new implant.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants are a great way to replace missing teeth and also provide an alternative to removable dentures. Implants are strong and durable and will last many years. On occasion, they will have to be re-tightened or replaced due to normal wear.

Dr. Choi and his team ensure the dental implant procedures are minimally invasive and comfortable for all patients.
